Detox, sober living, PHP and IOP programs do not market the same way as residential treatment. Which ad platforms each can use, where their clients come from, and the channels that fit.

Detox, sober living and outpatient programs cannot market the way a residential center does. The rules on which ads they may run differ, and so do the people who send them clients. Here is what changes at each level of care.

Where do treatment admissions come from?

Start with the referral mix, because it decides where the marketing money goes. Of 1,583,823 US substance use treatment admissions in 2024, 50.4% were referred by the person themself or friends and family, 24.6% by the criminal justice system or DUI programs, 9.4% by another substance use care provider, 6.6% by another health care provider and 0.8% by an employer.

Half of admissions start with the person or their family, which is who advertising reaches. The other half come through relationships, which is who your outreach reaches. Every level of care needs both, in different proportions.

Detox: urgent, around the clock

Detox is where people call in crisis, often late at night. What works:

Residential: regional reach, families and the funnel

Residential programs draw from much farther away and the decision often belongs to a family member. That is where the full mix fits: search, in-market email to people who recently researched treatment, display with retargeting, and Meta aimed at families. Our pillar page covers residential in depth.

PHP and IOP: close to home

Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient clients live within driving distance and keep their jobs or families. That changes the plan:

  • A tight radius. Advertising to people who cannot drive to you three to five days a week wastes money.
  • Step-down referrals from residential and detox programs, including your own.
  • Health care, court and employer referrals. Together they are about a third of admissions nationally (figures above), and they matter more for outpatient than for residential.
  • Local search and your Google Business Profile. Our treatment center SEO guide covers both.

Directories are starting to screen at this level: Recovery.com announced in July 2025 that it will require LegitScript certification for advertisers offering intensive outpatient or higher levels of care.

Sober living: no addiction ads, so relationships do the work

Sober living homes are in a different position. Google and Meta require LegitScript certification for addiction treatment ads, and sober living homes, peer support programs and referral-only lead-generation sites are not eligible for LegitScript's addiction treatment certification. That rules out addiction-recovery ads on those platforms for most sober living homes. What still works:

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a sober living home run Google or Facebook ads?
Not for addiction recovery services. Google and Meta require LegitScript certification for addiction treatment ads, and sober living homes, peer support programs and referral-only lead sites are not eligible for LegitScript's addiction treatment certification. Sober living homes rely on referrals, search visibility, directories and outreach instead.
How should a detox program market itself?
Detox is the most urgent level of care: people call in crisis, often at night. Paid search with LegitScript and Google certification, call answering around the clock, and fast insurance verification matter more than anything else.
How do outpatient and IOP programs get clients?
Mostly from nearby: referrals from residential programs stepping clients down, health care providers, courts and employers, plus local search. Outpatient programs serve people who live within driving distance, so a tight radius and strong referral relationships beat broad campaigns.
Where do treatment admissions come from?
In 2024, about half of US substance use treatment admissions were referred by the person or by friends and family, about a quarter by the criminal justice system or DUI programs, and the rest mostly by other substance use or health care providers, according to SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set.
